Home, Familiarity, Perspective

There is always a search to find your favorites in a home – special edge of the sofa that you can claim as yours, favored seat at the dining table, perfect side of the bed, your dearest view outside the window. In a space like home where things are already familiar, it is fascinating how we still stake our favorites to find even more comfort and familiarity.

I’ve always enjoyed seeing things from a new perspective. As a kid, I loved climbing walls, trees, chairs, anything. I would stand on top things so I could see differently. Constantly envious of the vantage point of adults, I broke many bones jumping, climbing rickety things and crawling through tiny spaces.

I recently sat on the far end of our new apartment’s dining table on a whim. I’d never sat in this corner of the apartment. I saw the most beautiful view of homes across from our building, covered slightly by autumn trees through the bedroom window. I felt a sense of wonder. So used to seeing our homes, our surroundings from a certain perspective, it is a welcome surprise when a new sight catapults into our eyes. I was reminded of the joy I used to get from learning about new corners of my house when I was young.

I love and hope that I will continue to find new perspectives in this familiar place.
